Yakov Birman
Yakov Birman graduated from St. Petersburg Conservatory where he received his Performing Arts Diploma and Doctor of Musical Arts degree. Born in Odessa, a city of great musical traditions, he began his studies with his mother, Rimma Birman, who was herself a student of Serafima Mogilevsky, pupil of Heinrich Neuhaus.
At the age of 13, Yakov made his debut with the Moldova Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, playing Saint-Saens' Second Piano Concerto. Starting in 1969, Yakov Birman performed with Soviet symphony orchestras. His performances throughout Russia were acclaimed for their precise pianism and high level of musical culture.
Yakov Birman came to United States in 1991 and quickly became active performing and teaching. He has produced a CD of Baroque music with a group of Los Angeles musicians which received enthusiastic praise from such notable musicians as Gary Graffman and Valery Gergiev. Dr. Yakov Birman has experience in music from the Baroque era to our own time. His repertoire ranges from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven to Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Schoenberg.
At the Fourth Beverly Hills International Music Festival (2007), Yakov Birman was featured as soloist in the rarely-performed Piano Concerto in C Major by Antonio Salieri.
